Dr Muhammad Abubakar Bala

CEO – FCVSN

Dr Muhammad Abubakar Bala has a dedicated period of 25 years working in the livestock sub- sector with a focus in animal health and production. He was born in Kaduna and hailed from Niger State, Nigeria. He is appointed by the President, the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a Member, Governing Council of Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) and Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN). He is involved in many community development programs around the environment, poverty reduction, job creation and health well being.

Dr Muhammad is a beneficiary of the United States of America’s International Visitors and
Leadership Program (IVLP) on Infectious Diseases and HIV/AIDS Hosted by States Department in the USA in 2007.

He also obtained several post-graduate advance training in different fields such as Ruminant Health & Diagnostics, Poultry Health, Climate and Feed from the GD Academy Deventer, The Netherlands; hands-on clinical continuing education from different parts of USA & Europe; a certificate in “participatory rural appraisal” & Community Based Animal Health workers’ scheme sponsored by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) at IITA/ILRI, Ibadan in 2004; Certificate in Veterinary epidemiology – Colorado State University, in 2008.

He was trained by Empretec Foundation/UNDP/UNOPS, on Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECs) April 2007; Grooming Enterprise Leaders (GEL) in 2010; Certificate in Enterprise Management (2011) & Social Sector Management (2016) from Enterprise Development Centre. He is a participant of the first class in Nigeria and Africa of Agribusiness Management Program (AgMP), Lagos Business School, Pan Atlantic University in 2014

He has published many papers between the years 1992 and 2006. In the year 2005, he worked as the veterinary officer/clinician at the Gwagwalada Veterinary Centre, Ministry of Federal Capital Territory, and Abuja (NYSC) 1994-1995. He worked as a clinician/consultant, City Veterinary Centre, Wuse, Abuja 1995-1997. He also worked as a senior consultant and project manager in Niger State and FCT, Abuja from 1997-1999 in the defunct PTF food supply program.

He is part of the party that established the leading Private Veterinary Clinics, Vet World Ltd Abuja, Blue Blood Vet Ltd, Vetpoint Ltd and Livestock Management Services Ltd, where he is the current supervisory veterinary consultant and director.

Dr Muhammad was part of the World Bank working group on ease of doing business. He was the national consultant to programs and projects at USAID, DFID, Grand Cereals Limited/UAC, UNDP, FAO/UN and many farm-dairy projects, beef cattle, and poultry production, at various times. He is an astute advocate of good governance, quality veterinary service and animal welfare/rights movement.

Dr Muhammad has worked as a consultant to ECHITAb STUDY Ltd/Gte (snakes must not kill and should not be killed) working with Liverpool Institute of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool, UK to develop potent indigenous snake ant venom. Dr Bala Muhammad is the protem secretary for Animal Welfare Initiative. He was the general secretary, Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) and the coordinating secretary, Technical Committee on bird flu (Avian influenza). He was most recently appointed the consultant for the Zoetis ALPHA Initiative in Nigeria, which is geared towards the advancement of livestock production and health.

LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT SERVICES LTD.

Dr Abubakar Bala Muhammad is leading the Livestock Management Services Ltd (LMS) – www.lms.com.ng and with the sister company Blueblood Vet Ltd (www.bluebloodvet.com) efforts in implementing various multi-million dollar interventions in Nigeria since 2017. Some of the ongoing programs are:

  • First Fleming Fund Grant in Nigeria – subgrantee in AMR surveillance in Nigeria.
  • Zoetis ALPHA initiative in Nigeria, consultant in the implementation of the Bill & Melinda Gates funded support to veterinary services in Nigeria.
  • University of surrey uHive UK, Zoetis – Bill & Melinda Gates sponsored baseline studies on select drugs, vaccines & diseases of Poultry & Ruminant in Nigeria.
  • Providing technical support to Humanitarian Dialogue in Nigeria (HD). A United Nations supported dialogue and reconciliation to the victims of farmers-herders clashes on the alternative to livestock production systems in Nigeria.
  • Technical partner to MTN Nigeria on providing Animal Identification Management System (AIMS).
